The idea of entrepreneurship isn’t something new. The idea of being a small business owner isn’t either and yet…it’s consistently the road less traveled.
Even though people continue to highlight unfair wages and ridiculous downtime to spend with our families. Even though there’s the constant frustration of not having the freedom we crave or being able to deal with the mental health issues that come along with working in a typical 9-5 or corporate job. And even though we know deep down that we want and deserve more in our bank accounts to give our family and loved ones a life that isn’t chained down by finances.
Even with all of these things constantly on our minds, some of us continue to wake up and hop back onto the hamster wheel.
It’s because of fear. The road less traveled, while alluring, is still the road less traveled. The lives we’re leading now typically come with a sense of predictability and sustainability that we think keeps us safe but is ultimately doing nothing more than holding us in our bubble as we dream of more.
So if you’re someone who has been toying with the idea of launching your own virtual practice but have been struck still by the overwhelming fear of actually taking the step because you’re not sure what’s to come or have been told horror stories by others (many who are still on the hamster wheel), I want to share some key concepts to keep in mind to help you unlock your potential and truly dive straightforward into the life you deserve.
Because the road less traveled still has many successful travelers and it’s time you join them.
If you’re worried about starting your own firm because you’re worried there are too many firms already out there, I’m here to let you know that this couldn’t be further from the truth. While there may be many law firms out there…none of them are run by you. The market is never oversaturated because there are always people doing things differently, bringing their own version of things to the table. Whether it be prices, client experience or your pep alone, you are providing a unique experience that sets you apart. And clients are always looking for that.
Something that could stop you from jumping into your practice all together is comparing yourself to the success of others. Setting your mind up for success before you start your firm will be key to laying the foundation. Dedicate yourself to the reasons you’re doing this (aka your crystal clear vision) as well as your end goal and keep that in sight. If you’re unsure of what I’m referring to, be sure to sign up for my free training to learn more about why this piece is so important in starting your work-from-home firm.
Know that your version of success may be different from someone else and know that there are a million and one ways to get there. There is no perfect way to do this. That’s the beauty of it and it’s a great concept to lean into! You can certainly hire a coach to help you steer you in the right direction but learning to do things your way will be the greatest reward in all of this.
There are overnight successes in entrepreneurship but the truth of the matter is that many of us have to do a lot of the upfront work of smearing on the elbow grease. And the best way to ease into this is by planning ahead for it. Having a savings account that you know you can fall back on can go a long way so that you’re not triggered to go right back to your old job when you have a bad month. You can also pick up a side hustle, such as freelance legal writing. Learn more about this here.
Give yourself space to grow and learn as you figure out how you want to run your business and what works best for generating the revenue numbers you’re looking for.
One of the most important fears (as silly as it sounds) when it comes to launching your business is knowing when it’s time to grow it. By holding on tight to your income and not investing it into growing your team, marketing your business or elevating your systems will keep you in the “launch phase” of your business and keep you operating as a start-up. Becoming the owner of your own virtual practice means knowing when it’s time to expand so that you can not only elevate your business to meet its growing demands but also elevate your experience as a business owner so you can tap into the benefits you started this for!
Taking the jump can feel like you’re navigating uncharted territories but if you take it with the right intentions, right mindset and reasonable expectations…it’s one you won’t regret!
